Stars are born with a bang. Birth cards are born from.. seeming chaos. Not only on paper, but also quite often in my head. I often get so excited I don't know where to start. In my mind's eye I can already picture the desired and perfect outcome, and its tempting to start drawing and working towards that final, perfect, mind's eye picture, but I know that planning the process and breaking it up in simple steps is best.
That means scratchy sketches, very rough looking composition thumbnails, questionable colour palets.. but all in the name of experimenting. Who knows, the outcome might prove better than what's in my head.
Besides - by taking small steps I can explain my process to the new-to-be parents and let them chip in with their creative ideas.
The collection of these first concepts often remind me of the drawings made by my two-year-old.. And yes, these concepts get sent to the new-to-be parents, just so they can witness the birth of their birth card.
It's a good thing I've got some final illustrations to prove I'm up for the job!
